Phillip Selznick published Leadership in Administration in 1957. It is still in print and actively used, which is a significant statement given that leadership books come and go frequently. Selznick makes a key point regarding decision making. Leaders make many decisions - at times they will make a decision that defines a critical step, which will impact the organization and/or themselves for years and perhaps for life. He also goes on to state that leaders may only make a few decisions like this in the life of their leadership. We as leaders need to know the difference and weigh what decisions would be classified by Selznick as “critical.”

I have written Strategic Cheriths to give perspective when a decision is made which impacts you in a critical manner. Some would say that these kinds of decisions have changed them for life. When I have been in my own few “strategic cheriths” I have found that these decisions have resulted in changes, which have impacted me for the rest of my life; they are that important and thus the reason I wrote this book. You need some perspective, especially from God’s point of view, for you see, “strategic cheriths” are life changing; if we fight them, we may miss the lessons we need to learn.
